Buddhist Education at VBT

All Buddhist Education activities are open to all Dharma friends and visitors.

  • FAMILY SERVICES

    • Weekly services are normally held on Sundays from 9:30 - 10:30 AM, unless otherwise noted on the Upcoming Events page or monthly calendar. Following the service, an adult study class and children's Dharma School classes are conducted from 10:30 - 11 AM. Click here for more details.

  • MEDITATION SERVICES

    • Held on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of every month from 7 - 8:30 PM. Meditation Services consist of sitting meditation, standing/walking meditation, brief Dharma message, and discussion class. No previous meditation experience is required. There is no cost to participate, but donations are cheerfully accepted. Click here for flyer.

    • Prior to each Meditation Service, from 6:30 - 6:50 PM, there will be a yoga-style streching/calming activity to prepare your mind and body for meditation.

  • BOOK CLUB

    • Held on one Sunday of every month in the temple foyer. Book Club members discuss a different book selection every month. Everyone is invited to participate even if you have not read the selected book. There is much to be gained by merely listening to the discussion.

The next meeting will be on Sunday, February 26, at 12 noon, discussing the book "The Buddha is Still Teaching: Contemporary Buddhist Wisdom" edited by Jack Kornfield. This book contains a selection of writings by several prominent Buddhist teachers. The Dharma is eloquently brought to life for us in short essays no more than one or two pages long. This means that this is a book you can read at your leisure. There is no need to rush to the end of the book. Most likely, you will find it useful to read a short passage at the beginning or end of your day. Books will be available for sale at the temple.

  • CLASSES, SEMINARS & SPECIAL EVENTS

    • WORKSHOP: "Shakuhachi Study as a Buddhist Practice" -- Instructor Mary Lu Brandwein approaches teaching/learning the shakuhachi (bamboo flute) from a Zen Buddhist perspective.  While we'll be introduced to the history of the shakuhachi, the physical instrument, and the music notation, the primary focus of the class will be to develop self awareness.  The shakuhachi is known to be difficult for beginners to even make a sound -- the way we approach the challenge of learning to play the instrument will give us insight into how we react emotionally and physically to challenges in our daily life.  In this way, the learning of the shakuhachi becomes a gateway to self reflection and receiving the Dharma (the teachings).

The workshop consists of three approximately 2-hour sessions.  Registration fee is $40 for VBT members and $50 for all others.  The fee covers participation in all three sessions.

If interested in signing up for the next workshop (in March/April 2012), please contact Vista Buddhist Temple by emailing vbt@vbtemple.org or calling (760)941-8800.
