The Sanbutsuge is the first of three gathas (songs of praise) in the primary sutra of
Jodo Shinshu, The Larger Sutra of Immeasurable Life. Being impressed with the radiant face
of the Buddha Lokesvararaja, the Boddhisattva Dharmakara endeavors to follow his great
teacher and resolves to create a Land where everyone is of exquisite beauty. In this land,
everyone will become enlightened.
The Sanbutsuge is translated as the Praises of the Buddha. An English
translation is provided, although chanting to the version is not traditional.
