Weekly Gatherings

Weekly gatherings are held on Sundays, beginning at 9:30AM. Please refer to the calendar to changes to the schedule. The gatherings are a tradition in Buddhist Churches of America churches and temples. The typical gathering is as follows:

  • Ringing of the Bell (in Japanese, Kansho) in traditional calling pattern to announce the beginning of service
  • Introductory remarks by chairperson
  • Quiet sitting meditation and burning of incence.
  • Opening chanting lead by Sensei (one of the following)
    • Vandana Ti-Sarana
    • Shishinrai
    • Sambujo
  • Sutra Chanting
    • (one of the following)
      • Juseige (English or Japanese)
      • Sanbutsuge
      • Ogonge
      • Junirai
    • Nembutsu
    • Ekoku (English or Japanese)
  • Buddhist recitation (one of the  following)
    • Golden Chain
    • The Three Treasures
    • Jodo Shinshu Creed
    • Jodo Shinshu Daily Creed
  • Dharma message
  • Gatha (Buddhist song)
  • Buddhist reading (chairperson's choice)
  • Introduction of first time visitors
  • Announcements
  • Closing remarks by chairperson.
