SATURDAY, JULY 24 12 - 2 PM == HANDS-ON KOTO & SHAKUHACHI (Yuki Easter & Mary Lu Brandwein) -- Experience firsthand these traditional Japanese musical instruments, sometimes referred to as the Japanese harp (koto) and bamboo flute (shakuhachi). Guests can learn how to play these instruments and learn about the unique music notation. 2 - 2:30 PM == INTRODUCTION TO BON ODORI (Elaine Marume) -- Learn and practice some of the popular Bon Odori Japanese folk dances in preparation for the evening of dancing. 2:45 - 3:15 PM == CYMBIDIUM ORCHID POTTING DEMONSTRATION (George Furuya) -- Get potting/growing tips from the temple's cymbidium orchid enthusiast. 3:30 - 4:15 PM == KOTO & SHAKUHACHI PERFORMANCE (Yuki Easter & Mary Lu Brandwein) -- Enjoy a performance of solo and duet pieces played on the koto (Japanese harp) and shakuhachi (bamboo flute). 4:30 - 5:30 PM == BUDDHIST DISCUSSION/DIALOGUE (Bill Dearth, Minister's Assistant from Orange County Buddhist Church) -- Learn about Buddhism and bring your questions. 5:30 - 6:15 PM == TAIKO DRUMMING ("Junior Taiko Group" & "Shokenji Taiko" of Vista Buddhist Temple) -- Experience the exciting sounds of Japanese taiko drumming as performed by the temple's adult and youth groups. 6:30 - 7:45 PM == BON ODORI JAPANESE FOLK DANCING -- Everyone is invited to join in the dance circle! No special attire or experience is required, just a happy heart and happy feet! The dances consist of simple, repetitive movements that tell stories about coalminers, fishermen, farmers, country life, and more, all accompanied by the rhythmic beat of a taiko drum.
SUNDAY, JULY 25 1 - 1:45 PM == THE TRUE POWER OF WATER -- Mr. Stuart Hayward will present the research of Masaru Emoto, author of the New York Times best seller "The Hidden Messages in Water". Emoto pioneered a technique to photograph water crystals at the momemt of freezing and found that the structure of water crystals can be altered by our thoughts and feelings. Since our bodies as well as the surface of the earth are more than 70% water, "the revelation that our thoughts can influence water has profound implications for our health and the well-being of the planet." (excerpt from "The True Power of Water" by Masaru Emoto) 2 - 2:30 PM == JAPANESE TEA TASTING (Soko Fosket, Tea Master) -- Sample Japanese matcha tea and tea cakes normally served as part of the casual style of tea ceremony known as ryu-rei.
